Survey on the Oral Health of Children Escaped and Immigrated from North Korea

Abstract


Objective: World health Organization has been not reported the DMFT survey for many years from North Korea. So, this report for caries experience data was performed with the limited condition to estimate and to get the information about the oral health state of the North Korea children.

Methods: 63 children average age 9.5¡¾2.5, who were escaped and immigrated from North Korea, in "Saetermin village". The oral examination was performed at the Department of Dental Clinic at the "Saetermin village" hospital. 9 children were joined at one time visiting and total 7 times, DMF and df were examined with each tooth surfaces, separating the permanent dentition for 7 to 12 years old and primary dentition for 7 to 9 years old. The result of the oral examined were recorded at the dental chart and collected the data for DMF and df by tooth and surface according to the age. The data were compared with the those of the South Korea children, and analyzed by used of the computer program SPSS, 12.0 version.

Results: It revealed that DMFT index average was estimated as 1.5 (0.6 to 2.8) and DMFT rate average was 8.5 (6.6 to 14.8), by age groups in permanent dentition. 12 years old, DMFT index was 2.5 and DMFT rate was 8.2%, DT rate was very high more than 90%, FT rate was only 2.2% and MT rate was relative high as 6.5%, compared with other countries. In primary dentition, the dft rate was 34.7%, dft index was 4.6 (3.3 to 5.3), dt rate was 98.4% and ft rate was 1.6%.

Conclusion: Through the result of this survey, it revealed that the supply of the oral cares were very low and the proper dental treatment and preventive cares were needed for promoting the oral health in North Korea.
